Representation

What is representation? - Representation refers to the construction in any medium (most commonly in mass media), of aspects of 'reality'. For example, people, places, objects, cultural identities and other abstract concepts. this may also be in speech or in writing or a still/moving picture.

Representation requires interpretation, we make our own judgement about them based on our previous experiences. When watching a film, the film maker will want you to be on the side of the protagonist and want the antagonist to fail, there for the audience need a reason to be on the protagonists side. The media can represent certain in ways that they want them to be seen by the viewer, for example when Hitler came to power he took over the German media in order to 'educate' the German people on how poorly Germany were treated after the first world war. As well as this they also portrayed Jews negatively. this shows that media is a powerful tool. and in the wrong hands for extreme cases like how Hitler used it, can be deadly. showing how influential media is on the everyday person.
