What is genre?
The definition of genre is 'a style or category of art music or literature'. In our case this is a for a film and our genre is Noir / Crime.
Here is just a small selection of the many different genres out their.
Different genres all have different conventions expected by the audiences who go to see them. For example a noir film has conventions of mysteries, crimes / murder, detectives, the femme fatal, dark streets , shadows , ect.. These are all things that most audiences would expect to see in a film noir even if they themselves have never seen one before because they are so important in defining the genre.
A very famous connotation would be a red rose which obviously connotes love and romance and would likely be seen in a romance film. Similarly in a noir film a dark rainy street may connote feelings of fear and danger, this is reinforced by the conventions of noir films (in which these locations are often very dangerous and fatal)
