This is when a company pays a TV programme or film to include their product in the feature.
Who benefits from this?
The film production gets paid from the company and the company who own the product can get more money from people buying their product due to seeing it in the film. This sometimes works out and sometimes does not. Audiences do not really benefit from this and quite often if the product placemnt is too obvious it can damage the film.
Product placement often works best when it is subtle and also makes sense in the film rather than being too prominent or out of place.
Examples of good product placement:
Here is an example of product placement that is very subtle and makes sense in this sense and the computer is important to what is going on and is needed.
This product placement is slightly more obvious but yet is still subtle enough not to detract from story as it is just in the background.
This product placement is very obvious but is in fact an important part of the film, helping to show the futuristic USA, it is effective as it does not take away from the story as it is part of it.
